This Month: Clearing Mental Clutter
This Week: The Power of Less
“Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.” - Douglas Adams, ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’
Our day is like a plate at an all-you-can-eat buffet. If you pile on everything at once, stuff mixes all together, or maybe it falls off your plate, and you don’t enjoy any of it.
But if you pick a few things that matter, you get a satisfying meal without the mess.
A simple trick is to pick one priority for the day. Just one. Sure, other things will get done, but having that one focus gives your day a purpose.
Work everything else around that one thing.
A helpful tool for this is time-boxing (or some people call it time-blocking). Set a block of time and work on nothing but that until time is up or the task is complete.
No dragging things out or chasing distractions. A clear start and stop make it easier to focus and avoid burnout.
And please stop trying to fill every moment. White space isn’t wasted time. It’s room to think, to pause, to be.
Note: We instinctively plan less time than we need in most instances, so give yourself 50% more time than you think it will take. If you’re done early, congrats, you have more space!
Try it for tomorrow. Pick your one thing. Time-box it!
You don’t have to pile everything on your plate…literally or metaphorically.
Hope your week is going well!
Yours in Simplicity,
-Jimmy
