The Stories Behind Our Stuff

The Stories We Keep

Ever held onto something just because of the story attached to it?

That old concert T-shirt from a band you barely listen to. The decorative plate from your grandma’s house that you never actually use. The random souvenir from a trip you barely remember.

We do not just keep stuff. We keep memories, emotions, and sometimes even guilt.

The problem is that these stories can trap us. They make it hard to let go, even when the stuff itself no longer serves us.

But the thing is objects aren’t the memories. The memories live in us.

Letting go of the item does not mean letting go of the experience or the memory.

Today’s Tiny Step Forward

Pick one sentimental item you have been holding onto. Ask yourself three questions.

  • Do I love this?

  • Do I use this?

  • Does it bring me joy today?

If not, try this. Take a picture of it. Write down the story behind it.

Then let it go.

You will still have the memory, just without the clutter.
