Encouraging Family Buy-In
This Month: Heart and Home
This Week: Shared Spaces
When we get the itch to declutter our own things, it’s pretty easy to do, relatively speaking. We make a decision and move on.
When other people are involved, it gets trickier. We absolutely don’t want to make decisions about other peoples’ things or spaces. But we should be willing to support them whenever they’re ready.
In my writing, coaching, and day to day life, I really work to be supportive and educational, rather than judgmental and prescriptive. I’ve found that isn’t the quickest way to get things done, but it is absolutely the most effective and sustainable.
So let me know your thoughts on this one after you’ve had a chance to read and digest it. I love hearing from you!
Family Friction
You're eager to simplify your life, but your family isn’t on the same page, yet.
To you, clutter equals stress. To them, it’s just part of everyday life. You’re ready to clear out the excess, while they’re holding onto that broken remote “just in case.”
Pushing them won’t work. Nagging? Even worse.
There’s a way to bring them around but logic alone isn’t going to cut it. People don’t change because of facts; they change because of emotions.
If they feel pressured, they’ll push back. If they feel inspired, they might just join you.
A Tiny Step Forward
Lead by example. Don’t preach.
Instead of explaining why they should declutter, show them the benefits through your actions.
Start by organizing your own spaces. Share how much more at ease you feel. Celebrate your progress openly.
When they notice you’re happier, calmer, and less stressed, they might wonder, “What’s different about you?”
That’s your chance to invite them in.
But make no mistake, this does not happen overnight. And some people might never get on board in quite the way you’d like them too.
But the good thing about this, if your space and mind are less cluttered, you’ll feel less stressed about theirs anyway. :)
