Seasonality

Seasons change. Let go to move forward.

As a runner, I’ve learned that every season asks for something different.

In winter, I’m pulling on fleece-lined tights, gloves, and a headlamp to see in the dark. Spring and fall means layers I can shed. Summer? Lightweight shirts, plenty of water, and a towel to keep sweat out of my eyes.

If I showed up to a July run in my January gear, I wouldn’t last long. Not because the gear is bad, but because it doesn’t match the moment.

The same is true in life.

We carry routines, habits, and commitments that made sense in a past season. So if we never stop to swap them out, we end up carrying around burdens that offer no value.

Consider this email your chance to check in, clear out, and move forward with only what fits right now.

Let’s get into it.

Oh, and if you find value in this, please share it with someone you care about.

Seasonal Sense

Nature gets it.

Trees drop their leaves to conserve energy. Birds fly south. Bears hibernate. Nothing in nature clings to the last season, and it doesn’t ask permission to change.

We can take a cue from that.

Seasonal swaps aren’t just about clothes or gear. They’re about alignment. A chance to pause and ask, “What no longer fits the season I’m in?”

Maybe it’s:

  • A habit built in survival mode that now just drains you

  • A goal that doesn’t match who you’re becoming

  • A commitment that once served you, but now just fills your calendar

You’re allowed to evolve.

You don’t need to carry winter into spring. You don’t need to keep chasing last year’s goals. You don’t need to stay who you were.

Some plants need pruning. Some crops need replanting. Prairie grasses grow stronger after fire. Fruit trees yield more when trimmed. Perennials thrive when cut back.

Letting go isn’t the end. It’s how growth begins.

Let it give you room to grow and bloom.

Meanwhile, tulips are somewhere in the Netherlands minding their business and absolutely crushing spring.

Daily Doables

One simple thing each day to help you line up with the season you’re in.

Mon: List one habit you’re carrying that no longer fits who you’re becoming.

Tue: Uncommit from one task or obligation that drains more than it gives.

Wed: Choose one goal to revise, postpone, or release altogether.

Thu: Clear one physical item (closet, calendar, desktop) that feels like winter in your life.

Fri: Spend 10 quiet minutes asking, “What season am I in right now?” and write what comes up.

Sat: Do something new that reflects the version of you you’re stepping into.

Sun: Rest. No pruning. No pushing. Just bloom in place.

Note: I’ve attached a more detailed, printable version of this checklist you could hang somewhere as a helpful reminder. You can find at the bottom of this email. Let me know what you think!

Parting Points

Let go of what no longer fits. Trim what’s overgrown. Replant what needs new roots.

You don’t have to do it all at once. Just one little swap at a time.

The tulips aren’t in bloom forever. But while they are? They show up full color, no apologies.

And so can you.
