Independence from Overwhelm

This week, we in the states will celebrate Independence Day.

In full transparency, it isn’t my favorite holiday. It’s not that I don’t love my country, (or having the day off). I’m just a bit of a grumpy old man when it comes to fireworks. Honestly, me and loud noises just don’t go well together.

I’m good to watch the nice, professional displays. Even the occasional fireworks set off in the neighborhood are fine…but once my bedtime hits, I’m done. But I digress.

But one holiday tradition I truly enjoy is to rewatch one of my favorite movies, Independence Day (1996).

In Independence Day, while the world panics and cities fall, it’s not brute strength that saves the day.

It’s Jeff Goldblum.

He’s calm.

He’s thoughtful.

He stays focused on the one thing that matters. Figuring out the source of the problem and creating a simple plan that actually works.

That’s essentialism.

Not reacting to every little crisis.

Not trying to do everything at once.

Just getting quiet, stepping back, and asking, “What’s the one thing I can do right now that actually matters?”

Today’s message is about how we can be the hero in our own story. How we can gain independence from overwhelm.

Simple & Sustainable

The United States broke free from tyrannical British rule, and the characters from the above-mentioned movie narrowly avoided suffering an extinction level event.

But in our own lives, we might need to break free as well. Here is a brief overview of some things that practicing essentialism (or minimalism) can help you achieve independence from…

The clutter that fills your space and steals your peace

Opening your closet shouldn’t feel like facing a mini avalanche. Visual clutter overwhelms the brain, raises stress hormones, and makes it harder to relax or focus.

The overcommitments that keep you rushing through life

When every evening is booked, there’s no time to just be. Constant busyness drains energy and leads to burnout faster than we realize.

The notifications and distractions that fracture your focus

Your phone buzzes, and suddenly you’re out of flow. Even small interruptions lower productivity and increase mental fatigue.

The guilt that sneaks in when you say no

You agree to something you didn’t want to do, just to avoid letting someone down. But saying yes out of guilt usually means saying no to yourself.

The pressure to always be busy

If your worth feels tied to how much you’re doing, rest starts to feel wrong. But studies show that recovery time actually boosts performance and clarity.

The feeling that you have to keep up with everyone else

You scroll social media and suddenly feel behind on everything. Comparison overload leads to anxiety and pulls your focus away from your own priorities.

The mental loops of indecision

You revisit the same decision over and over without making progress. Too many options wear down your willpower and create decision fatigue.

The weight of managing things that don’t matter to you anymore

You’re still showing up to meetings or holding onto belongings that no longer serve you. Carrying the nonessential takes energy away from what actually matters.

Daily Doables

Here are seven simple, doable ideas to become more independent in your life.

Tuesday – Find 30 minutes to just think, with no phone and no noise

Wednesday – Say no to one thing you didn’t want to do anyway

Thursday – Close all extra tabs, both digital and mental

Friday – Celebrate in a way that feels aligned with your values

Saturday – Revisit a decision you’ve been avoiding. Make it.

Sunday – Reflect on what felt clearer this week
