Making Fewer, Better Choices
This Month: Clearing Mental Clutter
This Week: Decision Fatigue
Me: What should we have for dinner?
Brain: Ah, the eternal question. How about tacos?
Me: We had tacos yesterday.
Brain: So… more tacos?
Me: No, we need variety.
Brain: Okay. Pizza.
Me: We had that two days ago.
Brain: Fine. Pasta.
Me: Had that three days ago.
Brain: …Taco pizza?
Me: Are you even trying?
Brain: Listen, I make thousands of decisions every day. You think I’ve got new ideas for dinner every night? I peaked in 2019.
Me: So what do we do?
Brain: Just stare into the fridge and hope something speaks to you. It’s the only way.
Me: You’re useless.
Brain: And yet… you still rely on me.
Me: I hate us.
Brain: Same. Let’s order tacos.
{end scene}
Does that conversation sound familiar? This is decision fatigue… and it sneaks into more parts of life than we realize.
The more choices we make in a day, the harder each one gets. It’s exhausting.
But the good news? You can simplify.
A lot of people think routines are boring. But the truth is, having a few set choices actually frees you up to be more spontaneous in other areas. When you don’t have to waste energy deciding what to wear or what to eat, you’ve got more mental space to be creative, solve problems, and say “yes” to things that really matter.
Put the small stuff on autopilot so you can fully show up for the fun stuff
Pick a few go-to options and stick with them. In the never-ending discussion about what to have for food, consider having at least one night a week set with something. Pizza night, or Taco Tuesday. Or maybe even meal-prepping if you want to take it further.
All of this to say, spend less time deciding and more time living.
You will enjoy it.
Yours in Simplicity,
-Jimmy

One way I’ve nipped decision fatigue in the bud is establishing a morning routine. Make bed, brush teeth, shower, get dressed, head to the table.
Same coffee, same cup, same seat, and same window. But somehow every morning is different and beautiful in its own way.
