Managing Emotions While Decluttering
This Month: Clearing Mental Clutter
This Week: Overcoming Overwhelm
Happy Humpday!
One of the biggest humps to get over while decluttering is the emotions we tie to the stuff. But that hump can often feel like a mountain. (Ok, I’ll stop saying hump now…that was the last one, I promise.)
You might feel guilt holding on to something you never use. Or fear you’ll need it the second you let it go. Or sadness because it reminds you of a time you miss. Or perhaps you’re afraid you will lose a memory if you get rid of something.
That’s normal.
Here’s how to manage those emotions:
Acknowledge them.
You’re not weird for feeling attached to an old sweatshirt or a stack of birthday cards.
Separate the item from the memory.
Letting go of the thing doesn’t erase the person, place, or time it represents.
Give yourself permission.
It’s okay to release something that no longer serves your life today.
Decluttering might feel cold and heartless at first, but if you think about it, it’s almost exactly the opposite.
It’s an act of care for your present and future self.
What could you let go of if you knew you’d still carry the memory with you?
Yours in Simplicity,
-Jimmy
