Why Decisions Feel Exhausting
This Month: Clearing Mental Clutter
This Week: Decision Fatigue
“The truth is it’s not about willpower, it’s about reducing decisions.” -Robyn Conley Downs
Greetings Earthling,
Welcome to another week. I hope you have recovered from the time change this weekend. (This email isn’t about daylight savings time, but if you have a petition I could sign to help end it, just let me know!)
Just as an hour change can throw off our routine for a little bit, so can decision fatigue. And yes, this is absolutely a real thing.
Every choice you make, big or small, drains a little bit of your mental energy. When your life is cluttered with decisions that don’t really matter, it’s like carrying around a leaky battery.
By the time you get to the choices that do matter, you’re running on fumes.
That’s why people like Steve Jobs wore the same thing every day. It wasn’t a fashion statement. It was one less thing to think about.
I haven’t yet gone to that extreme, but I do wear the same thing to work depending on the day of the week. Ie, every Monday I wear my red polo and black pants, etc. In other words, I’m not making any decisions when I get ready in the morning. I’ve taken care of that!
Simplifying your life is about making fewer pointless decisions so you have more energy for the ones that count.
Where can you cut back on choices today?
Yours in Simplicity,
-Jimmy
